Using v24 SP1 on 10 Linksys WRT54GL right now. Works great and has for nearly a year. Lots of features! Learn Linux and you'll never think the same about computers again.

Just make sure your router is supported.

I have used it since the beginning, I have bricked 10 or 12 routers and flashed twice that/

I have one I use , its overclocked and running LOADS of data THROUGH IT.  I mean gigs a day and it is rock solid.

I have it on my wrt54g, and it is light years ahead of the linksys firmware.

+1 for DD-WRT on a WRT54GL

i use them as VPN endpoints for a customer network. pfSense at office acts as OpenVPN server and the endpoints will automatically establish SSL VPN tunnels back to the office when they are plugged in, pretty rock solid for this non-enterprise application

remember that WRT54GL has a 200 Mhz MIPS processor, so don't expect to perform a ton of processing on your data. still, huge improvement over stock firmware.

Yep, make sure you get the right router. Don't get stuck using the lite version of ddwrt.

I use it on a Linksys 150N router and it is flawless. Light years ahead of the original firmware.

Try Tomato.  It's another open source router firmware.  It doesn't have quite as many features as dd-wrt, but it's still got more than 99% of people are ever going to use.

I've been using it for a couple of weeks now, and thus far, it's been very nice.

And Tomato has some really nice graphing features that DD-WRT doesn't.

There possibly are ways to unbrick it.  What router do you have?

WRT54G V8

I've had it about a month but was pretty disappointed in the performance so I gave it a shot.

Unfortunately, I can't even get back.  It's freakin' dead!

my linksys is too new and has the bare minimum amount of ram. I think linksys did this on later ones to discourage the use of third party firmware

iirc from when I looked into it I could run a lite version but the differences in features wasn't worth the hassle and potential risk of bricking it
