I am replacing my Geforce 6800 Ultra with a Geforce 8600 GT. I know how to physically swap the cards, but my question is, do I have to disable the display adapter before I remove the 6800? Or can I just un-plug one and plug in the new one? I am running Windows XP if that matters.

Thanks,

this is what i do

1.   download the latest driver for the nvidia card
2.   uninstall the nvidia driver with your old card installed.  if it asks to reboot click no.
3.   turn the computer off then install the new card.  when it boots of asking to install the driver just cancel the install.  after all the messages go away saying you hardware didn't install correctly install the new driver you had downloaded.
4.  reboot and enjoy
