Poll Inbound
I'm doing the yearly reinstall of the Cracktop Enpower EN660 (ie MSI 1637 v2) laptop Intel T7100 Duo Core 2 3gb RAM Intel 965 chipset 3GB RAM Was running Vista SP2 Beta I use this box as my main computer. Lots of streaming video, Justin TV, TVU Player, TVants and similar software. Lots of surfing. No gaming, unless you call online flash Zombie games gaming. I have a Sierra 595 AirCard so I use the Cracktop on the road and away from home often. It has a larger 19" LCD monitor plugged into it most of the time, often with the extended desktop. I don't use the swapfile if I can help it. Just out of curiosity, what does the collective think I should install on it now? Do not suggest, Ubuntu or a similar Linux derivative. I've been down that road. I don't have the patience to spend all day fucking around with it. I have a bet with my wife that this will turn into a XP vs Vista pissing contest on the first page. Windoze 7 Beta was left off on purpose. I plan to install it on a virtual desktop in the next couple of weeks. It's not suitable for use on my main computer. Tried it already. Thanks ZM |

XP Home (Professional if you can).
If you were a gamer I'd say vista, but since you're not.. the only thing Vista Home has going for it is DX10, which you don't need. Win2k wouldn't be a horrible choice either though, would scream on that thing so long as you can find drivers for all your stuff. |

What's listed in the poll is what I have on hand. Sorry no 64bit anything. I don't think my box supports 64bit. The 64bit version of Windoze 7 wouldn't install on it. The 32bit version did. Your processor supports 64-bit, no reason you shouldn't be able to install it. |

The Verizon software doesn't work with W7 and I was unable to get the card to act like a regular modem. If I dual boot W7 I can figure out stuff like that. I'm not going to use Windoze 7 right now. I need a bigger HD to dual boot W7 with another operating system. |

yearly reinstall??? what is this? are you having a specific issue? i have been running vista on my main rig since it was first released to the public. (reseller discount) before that it had run xp pro since it had been released It's just something I do on my main computer. No reason other than to clear out all the Microcrap bloat and start fresh. To the person that suggested Ubuntu. Please refer tp my original post. Been there, done that, Subnet was right. No Ubuntu thank you. |

yeah, but your spending all day fucking around with a pos M$ product when you could have installed, tweaked and been up and running with something that will out perform the others for what you stated you wanted to do.
It was open source advice, didn't cost you anything |

It was open source advice, didn't cost you anything If you read the original post, Ubuntu was off the table as an option. I ran Ubuntu for a week. I didn't care for it. It was made by geeks for geeks. Not a bad thing, but life is short. I need my computers to run now, not when I chase down the driver. Got tired of typing my password in ad nauseum. In my opinion, Ubuntu's not ready for prime time. They're close, but not quite there. If I get a bigger HD I can see myself tinkering with it, but not on the everyday computer. |
