| I know very little about computers other than how to turn 'em on so hopefully someone will have the patience to explain what I need. I have an older PC (about 600 Mhz processor and about 4 GB hard drive, don't know how much RAM) in my office. Its primary function is to run my router. I'd like to be able to use it for light internet browsing and word processing as well but it is painfully slow. Right now I'm running XP, IE and nothing else. I have no experience with Linux but I heard about DSL and thought it might help to squeeze a little more out of an antique. I did some web searches but everything I've found so far in the way of instructions seems directed at a bit more advanced users. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Take a look at this link for installing DSL. It has info for instlaling on a compaq but the basics are there for installing.
http://yatsite.blogspot.com/2008/10/damn-small-linux-40-install-on-compaq.html If you have more specific questions go to the DSl forum and look through some of the posts http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/dsl-n/f/viewforum/9.html ALso take a look at Ubuntu. Very easy to install and runs on older hardware. I had it running on a similiar system.. |

TinyMe also has a small footprint, with only a 200 Mb ISO file, and is comparable to DSL. I recently used it on an older laptop that I set up for my brother, to be used as a media player, and played through his stereo system. Laptop's a PIII, with 256 Mb of RAM. Works just fine.
You can read the Wiki about TinyMe HERE |

Hey Blue,
DSL is very nice, You may run into trouble with DSL not finding your network but they make a LIVE disk for dsl. Let me ask you this? Can you boot the pc up to the cd rom> If so, you wont have to load anything, it runs from the disk drive... message me if you need me to mail you some copies of linux.. |
