I've done some searching on the net but most of the hits are from a couple of years ago.  I have a couple of extra 1G flash drives I could use for working on infected machines etc.  Is there a fairly easy way to set this up?

What do you want to boot?

I haven't done so yet, but there are versions of several distros that work well from USB.  I know DSL (Damn Small Linux) has one.

I don't really care I guess.  I have Ubuntu on my laptop so I'm a little familiar with Linux.

Last weekend I worked on a friend's computer that was so infected I could barely get past the boot and wasn't able to clean the virus from the drive without putting it in an external enclosure.  I'd like to be able to boot and clean a machine with the USB drive.  I don't know of any antivirus software for Linux so I wanted to boot with XP.

how about OSX on a thumb drive

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=42899

one thing to note with any OS on a thumb drive, is to NOT put the swap/paging file on the USB drive. It will destroy the thumb drive in as little as an hour due the the millions of writes.

seems pretty pointless to me.   i don't know any antivirus that will run on a linux bases operating system

your best bet would be to load malware removal utilities on the drive,  boot into safe mode update and run them.      thats just me

I use UBCD for ailing machines.  I have run into a few motherboards that wouldn't recognize the USB device as a floppy like it is supposed to.
