A bunch of random popups have been appearing, ones the google tool bar can't stop.

I'm looking for an anti-virus/spyware program that I can download, one that in itself isn't ANOTHER spyware program like so many out there.

Suggestions?

download spybot s&d, update, and run a full scan
I wouldn't recommend installing the "tea timer" though - it can be annoying

Free online scanner.  Takes awhile but it's pretty good.

My comp froze during the scan. Every time I run a scan and elimination program, my computer freezes up. Whatever the hell is in this thing does NOT want to leave, and is making it hell for me to get rid of it. Should I get a torrent of Norton?

Can you get into the MSCONFIG program and prevent all but the essential programs from loading at startup?

Can you identify the offending program and end it via the task manager?

forget scans, once you're infected, there's no 100% way to get rid of everything.  Save all your files and just reformat.  This gives you a clean slate and from then on, install ESET security suite.

Again, with all the work, just reformat and fresh install.  Start with a clean slate
