So Im getting this thing pounded into my skull over and over again in my classes at school. What is the point? Why spend so much time teaching this to students. Seems to me like the only real use would be if someone wanted to develop a new method of sending data over a network...

so that, when you're trying to debug an issue, you use the appropriate tools.

if you can't ping the server (network), no point in debugging the application layer. Better check if your cable is plugged in (physical).

NO! You must understand the connection between layers and how to troubleshoot networked devices and how one layer impacts the layers above it. For example, troubleshooting layers2 and layer3 issues and how the nodes learn about their connectivity to one another (MAC addresses and related IP addresses: ARP). Just keep learning the OSI model as best you can and DO NOT under estimate the value of what you learn, it will pay dividends!
