I'm teaching myself to use LaTeX this summer, using the basic Windows package (MikTeX + TeXnicCenter).

I have documents working fairly well--even making APA format documents.  What I'm not up to speed on is BibTeX.

I'm using the APAcite package, so the citation commands in the individual documents are a little bit different than the default.  However, it is the actual bibtex file that I'm puzzled about.

Is an empty bibtex file automatically created somewhere when you compile a document?  Is there special bibtex editing software, or is it typically done in the same editor you use for the LaTeX documents?

Hell, I'm not even sure what questions I need to be asking about it at the moment, I've been so busy with the class I hardly have time to learn new software.  But, it's best learned and retained under pressure, so...

Anyone with experience want to help a newbie out?
