My update re: Microsoft.com gave me the option of uploading Service Pack 3. I've read horror stories of endless reboots. Should I tempt fate and install the update or wait?
I've gotten the blue screen of death on a video issue for the past few weeks and wonder if the Service Pack would provide help to alleviate the problem or bring on a host of other issues too numerous to mention.

you've done your regular weekly backups right

ANYTIME your system is giving blue screens its not a good idea to change MORE things with the system   its better to resolve the issue,  then do the upgrade.

it seems to me more systems(on arfcom) have been fixed by cleaning out the cpu fans and the dust outta the computer than anything

I've uploaded the most recent video card upgrades, dusted the box twice, gone back to a system restore point that was stable, and still have problems. The major program I run is CoD 4 but anything that requires a little video is a slow goer.  Ive got a GeForce7900 video card with 256 M of Ram (I know its not the latest and greatest) and have 1 MB of RAM (I know that 2 2ould be better).

yeah i'd definitely look at getting at least 2gb of ram.

if it ONLY locks up during gaming,  and not while the system is idle,  id say go for the upgrade.  aGAiN  as long as your system is backed up

I'll look into the memory upgrade asap.  It seems to be something either in the video card (that has the most recent update installed) or the RAM.  Without any better ideas ahead the RAM seems to be the next choice and is cheaper than a new video card.

+1
over heating can cause lots of weird issues
plenty of the HPs we support at work have been fixed by simply cleaning the vents and heatsink. Or mounting them so that one vent isn't blocked by the floor. The bank likes to install them standing on the narrow end. well one of the narrow ends is the intake vent and the other is the exhaust, so either way the airflow gets screwed when they do that

I've taken off the side panel and it seems to work better.  What or where is the heat sink located?  I've looked and I don't see anything with a H or a C or a spray wand on it?
