I run Windows XP and am satisfied with it.  I'm interested in learning more about Linux, but mostly I need it because my game emulators have quit recognizing my PS3 controller and I know Linux has drivers for it.

I don't have a CD burner, typically I mount drives artifically from ISO files.  Is there any way for me to install Linux on my machine without a REAL boot CD?  Again, I only need the OS and functionality at least for now will be running emulators.

I'm going to need more specifics.  As far as I know you have to boot Ubuntu from a real CD.  I'm not even sure if what I'm asking for is possible.

I download a lot of music and movies, but I don't own any kind of burners so in the extremely rare event I get caught there's no way I can get pegged for distribution.

well, get a player only.

surely you have friends who will burn a cd for you

or you could use a usb thumbdrive/memory stick or external drive kept at work (heck even borrow one)

if you use a file sharing program that uploads while downloading(pretty much all of them) they'll still nail you for distribution
they're not going to give a rats ass about if you have a burner or not
so buy a burner
