I need to remote desktop from a win xp pro computer to a win xp home computer. It seems that the server software is on the xp pro machine and client only is on the xp home end. Problem is I need to remote to the xp home computer to use an accounting program on it, so server and client need to be reversed.

Anyone know a way to make this work?

you can use the built in software to connect to a xp pro machine.

but you can't connnect to a xp home machine(using the xp remote desktop software).   you will need third party software like pcanywhere or gotomypc.com to do this

VNC is not secure.  There is a program called crossloop.

There is also logmein.  Both are secure.

UltraVNC with the encryption plugin would cover security.

I also use the SingleClick setup for UltraVNC.  This allows me to support people without them having to have anything installed on their PC.  That's my favorite part of it.  It works like this:

  1. Get phone call of someone needing support.

  2. Fire up my VNC listener on my PC.

  3. Give the person a URL to run the .exe for support.  Or if they already have it they just run it.

  4. They see a splash screen with my logo and it connects to my listener (encrypted).  The app they run is memory resident only.  No install to the disk.

  5. Fix their PC.

  6. Disconnect.

Is this on your local network, or will you be going over the Internet?  If local, just use VNC.  Who cares about secure?

tightVNC is a secure version that will do the trick. I use it all the time. Should be able to get a copy from freshmeat.net. Should run on XP or any other OS.

I believe that TightVNC lacks an encryption option and traffic (other than the authentication) is in the clear.  It does have the advantage over UltraVNC to run on multiple platforms though.

I'd like the capability to do it over the internet, as well as local. I'm not going to use the Mcafee product, and I'd like to direct access, instead of using a web based third party server. There are some software products from a few different vendors, but it's hard to tell what's good and isn't.
Accounting software will include things like bank account information, so secure is a must.
