I just cracked a hinge on my (five year old) Thinkpad.  But I refuse, flat out, to use a notebook with that highly unusable touch pad gizmo.

Every notebook user forum I've registered with in the last 48 hours has neglected to send me a welcome email activating my account.

You guys are my only hope.

Can anyone recommend a company (other than Lenovo as I'm already cruising their product line) that uses the eraser head/nipple pointer?  I know fewer and fewer companies are making them (but I don't know why since they're far superior to anything else out there)....

Thanks.

That would definetely be the preferred method, and in fact whenever I am at a desk or table I do use a mouse, however I am finding myself in many positions where I can't use the mouse (couch, bed, etc) -- I tend to haul this stupid laptop all around with me these days when I'm not working so I can keep checking in here and look at gun porn!!!  Damn this sickness.

Can you qualify your statement?  I agree with you that IBM is superior, however at the moment the Dell is more affordable.  In another life I aquired 1200+ Dell PCs and laptops for the organization I worked for, and we had overwhelming success with their products.  Not questioning your statement, just wondering what you base it on.

The Lenovo's are fantastic and I hope I end up finding one that is affordable.  If not, though, I had long considered Dell as a viable option.

Thanks for the discussion.

Dell laptops are not durable at all(I'm not speaking for desktops that is beyond the scope of this thread).
They may survive just fine chained to a desk, but if you take them anywhere they will break.
The company I worked for uses dell latitudes.  They were constantly being replaced, and repaired, even by people who were gentile on their equipment.  The keyboards short out, the hinges bust, the stupid proprietary power connector is fragile, the lcd's have a thin protective coating on them making them more susceptible to pressure marks. The cheap lcd's they use also gain way more dead pixles than any other laptop I have used.
These words are echoed by almost every other person I know who was ever issued a Dell laptop.

Laptop brands I have used that I consider good, best first,    apple, ibm, gateway, toshiba, hp/compaq. All of those are good laptop brands.  Dell laptops are lemons.
You get what you pay for... is your data worth the what you'll save?

So how bad is the Thinkpad? Is the screen broken off or is it still usable.

Oh, +1 on the International Business Machine
