I reinstalled my Dell XP software on a new hard drive - the old one is currently in a landfill somewhere after going down in a blaze of glory.  I figured the CD Key was on a box that is located somewhere in the old pile of software, manuals, etc that is continually accumulating, but I cannot find it.  The software is installed, but it gave me a 30 day time window to register it and I'm down to three days left.

If someone could point me in the right direction as far as getting either a universal CD key or how to obtain the one specific for this disk, I would appreciate it.

The CD came with the computer which was purchased around 2002.

If there is any other info you need from me to assist this process, please let me know.

Thanks!

I just tried a keyfinder off of magicjellybean.com and it came up with a key but on trying it, it said the product key is unauthorized.

Ideas?

Should be a sticker somewhere on your PC with the key.

If not.. Look at computers on ebay, the dumbasses always seem to take a picture of the CD key.

a quick search for rockxp on yahoo or google should help. use at your own risk

as posted above the key should be on your computer.   the side of the case.

Also look for a program called WPA_KILL. but you may not be able to use updates if you run it.

There is no key on the computer.  It was only on the software box.  I got an email from a friend with a solution and will find out in a few minutes if it works

IF the software(windoz xp) is installed it HAS to have a product key.   anytime you install xp  it requires you to type in a key before it will continue

unless you have a pirated copy of windoz installed

Call MS. I couldn't find the book that had my sticker on it. They gave me a new key.

When you buy a computer with XP preinstalled, the installer is required to put the CD-Key on the physical computer somewhere.

If you bought XP at a store then it would be in the box somewhere, unless you stuck it on your computer like you're supposed to.

If you registered it, try calling up Microsoft.

Of course, google seems to have a lot of keys too.

On Dell PCs, the Windows key is on a sticker on the side, top, or back of the PC.

Yep. Works like a champ.
You should also be able to find a key generator. I have it somewhere, can't remember where.

I always thought those restore images on Dells and similar didn't need a key or activation since they weren't a regular install but rather a Ghost type image

correct IF you have the original dell cd(the maroon looking one).   and you install it on a DELL computer,   it will not ask for the product key NOR will you have to active your copy of windoz

Or if you have the mfg cd to toss into the drive and let it rip... no key needed :)
