| I'm running a Win2K laptop with a Linksys PCMCIA NIC to a Westell327b. Verizon router. I have WEP and MAC filtering set up. When I try to connect using the wireless setup the Linksys utility tells me that I am connected to the access point but it can't find the internet. When I open IEXP I have no problem connecting. I have called verizon ,and they can't solve the problem. But I have no confidence in the hadjis that I have spoken to. If any of you guys can help, much thanks. |
I am having difficulty seeing what the problem is. You say that the Linksys utility tells you that your connected but "it can't find the internet". Then on the other hand you say that when you open Internet Explorer you "have no problem connecting". What exactly are you having the problem with? Are you saying there is no problem when just connected directly to the PC (without the router)? Finally, I doubt you spoke with any "hadjis" when calling tech support. Look it up...you most likely spoke with an Indian. Biiiiiiiiiig difference. |

Your problem is that the linksys wireless software is not 'getting along' with your version of Windows... It's not a problem, it's due to you installing vendor-made software that does something which is already part of the OS... 1) Uninstall all Linksys software (not the device drivers, but anything that shows up in add/remove programs) 2) Enjoy... NEVER NEVER NEVER install software that comes with hardware - download the drivers from the manufacturer's website, and let your OS handle the rest... You do not need the LinkSys utility - WinXP and above have perfectly adequate wireless support built in... |

Thanks for the responses, I will look into using just the drivers instead of the provided utility, I'm very new at the wireless game(Last week!) as far as the "Hadji comment " his name was Rashid, he had horrible English, and I'm not sure he had much more knowledge about wireless networking than I do. After 35 minutes of trying the same process repeatedly (without sucess) he finally referred me to the second level of help, who also tried without sucess, so I thought I would ask here to ensure I really did not have a problem. Further question, does Win2k have the capabilities to skip the vendor utility as XP? |
Reading is very fundamental. He said he is running Win2K.

DONT uninstall the linksys software. Windows 2000 does NOT come with the built in Wireless Zero configuration services that began in Windows XP. You can simply use the drivers in windows 2000 without a utility - however, the driver must allow you to be able to input a SSID, WEP/WPA key, etc.... This is NOT recommended. First thing I always recommend - is turn off all that MAC filtering and a security on the router.... and on the client. Set it up for simple, basic, unauthenticated wireless, with a SSID broadcast in the clear. Make sure everything works as you expect, and then enable each security step one by one. You need to go back to basics when the shit breaks. |
| I ran into the same thing as you with a recent Win2K setup and the Linksys utility. As FALARAK stated turn off all the security stuff at the router and try to connect to the internet as is. When I enable WEP in my particular case I found that by default the Linksys utility had something not quite right. Just like in your case it was connected but not accessing the net. What solved it was that I had to change the a WEP key setting from Open to Shared. Everything was fine after that. |
