Got a problem that i thought maybe someone could help me with. I am having a trouble with my laptop internet connection. It doesn't connect. Not with wireless or cable. the story. I have a home computer that has been hoooked up for a while. I got a laptop about a year ago and was able to use my cable conection and router with ease as well as pick up several different networks. I had a two month interuption in my service when i went away to work and when i got it hooked up again my laptop would not connect. Even when i plug the wire from my modem (thats working fine on the home comp) into the laptop i can not connect. I can not get on any other wireless networks either. Thanks for any advice, and if you read this far...wow, sorry for the pr description/vocab ETA i was able to use my laptop at airports in AK, and WA on the way home. |

so it will not work with it hooked up to the router OR hardwired to the modem. are you sure your service is even working? call your isp thats the first step. if you have taken the laptop elsewhere and it works we know the laptop working edit i reread your post again ![]() "here" the cable company requires you to "register" one mac address to work on the service. if you hook up another computer (obviously has a different mac address) it iwll not work. don't know what they do elsewhere |

Also - if you are hooking it up hardwired to the cable modem.... most cable modems need to be powered off for a minute or so when changing the MAC that is connected to them, in order to get a DHCP address. Basically - Power off the cable modem (unplug) and laptop. Connect your laptop (hard wired) to the cable modem. Wait 2-3 minutes. Power on cable modem. Wait 1 minute. Turn on laptop. Surf. As to the wireless not working.... make sure your antenna is enabled on the laptop... many have a key which turns this on or off. Make sure it isnt set to disabled in XP. Make sure that your "zero config wireless" service is running under services in the control panel. |

a couple winsock fixes to try xp winsock fix xblock for the uber geek you can follow this netsh winsock reset Warning Programs that access or monitor the Internet such as antivirus, firewall or proxy clients may be negatively affected when you run the netsh winsock reset command. If you have a program that no longer functions correctly after you use this resolution, reinstall the program to restore functionality. |

Let's see...to add on something original... * Another thought...what are the brand/model numbers of your modem and router? In a number of cases, the modem is a combo router/modem device like the Westell 2100/2200 series. If the combo modem/router and router are both trying to make routing decisions, this can sometimes manifest itself as data making it to one machine fine while another machine can't seem to connect. It's called couble-NATing. It's possible to work with a modem/router and router, but it helps to configure one of them so it's not trying to make routing decisions. |
