I've got a Dell 8400 Dimension and the hard drive is all but full & we keep getting low disc space notifications.

How can I tell if I've got the space to add a 2nd internal hard drive, or should I go with a external hard drive of some kind.

Open the case and look......If there is space under or around the hard drive...The space would be about the same size... You could also take a pic and we could tell you.....

Hummm, that's a challenge

How can I find out how big the hard drive is? Thought there was a tad someplace, but can't find it at all

According to the dell web sight you can add a second drive and it can be a ide or sata... But don't quote me on that..

Goober , what I meant is there not a way to find how much storage space the current hard drive has & how much space is free vs full

Just go into My Computer, right click>properties on the hard drive listed there.

Did I miss the question?

Adding an additional hard drive is as easy as mounting it in the case and plugging in power and the IDE cable making sure your jumper is set to slave

Yes you can add a second HD. the 8400 supports up to 4 SATA sevices and has room.

What kind (brand??) of hard drive do I want to look at & is the internal or external hard drive more efficient.

From what I can tell I've got 66.4 GB used & 7,96 GB free space on the hard drive. This could be why it's so slow eh

What is SATA

Oh and how big of a hard drive should I look at???

For hard drives, your best bets will be Seagate and Western Digital.  Stay away from Maxtor.

From Wiki:

In computer hardware, Serial ATA (SATA, IPA: [ˈsæ.tə] or [ˈseɪ.tə]) is a computer bus technology primarily designed for transfer of data to and from a hard disk. It is the successor to the legacy AT Attachment standard (ATA). This older technology was retroactively renamed Parallel ATA (PATA) to distinguish it from Serial ATA. Both SATA and PATA drives are IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) drives, although IDE is often misused to indicate PATA drives.

Basically it's a newer standard for HDDs and devices.

Size of the drive will also depend upon how much you want to spend.  For a couple of hundred bucks you could get ~500GB or so.

Here is a 250GB from Newegg for $79.

SATA is a new drive standard.

I think you should stick with a SATA drive so you do not have to worry about salve-master IDE settings, you do not put the HD on the same IDE channel with the CD drive, and you have plenty of SATA connectors. The set-up of a SATA drive will be slightly easier especially for a novice.

You can get a 250GB Seagate SATA from Newegg.com for $80 a 320GB for $95.
