I've got a Dell 8400 Dimension and the hard drive is all but full & we keep getting low disc space notifications. How can I tell if I've got the space to add a 2nd internal hard drive, or should I go with a external hard drive of some kind. |

first run this and see if it helps ccleaner you can also disable system restore. that can free up alot of space also |
|
Hummm, that's a challenge How can I find out how big the hard drive is? Thought there was a tad someplace, but can't find it at all |

According to the dell web sight you can add a second drive and it can be a ide or sata... But don't quote me on that.. Link |

Yes you can add a second HD. the 8400 supports up to 4 SATA sevices and has room. Link form the manual. Removing and Installing Parts Dell™ Dimension™ 8400 Service Manual support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8400/SM/parts.htm#wp1052308

What kind (brand??) of hard drive do I want to look at & is the internal or external hard drive more efficient. From what I can tell I've got 66.4 GB used & 7,96 GB free space on the hard drive. This could be why it's so slow eh ![]() What is SATA Oh and how big of a hard drive should I look at??? |
For hard drives, your best bets will be Seagate and Western Digital. Stay away from Maxtor.
Basically it's a newer standard for HDDs and devices. Size of the drive will also depend upon how much you want to spend. For a couple of hundred bucks you could get ~500GB or so. Here is a 250GB from Newegg for $79. |

SATA is a new drive standard. I think you should stick with a SATA drive so you do not have to worry about salve-master IDE settings, you do not put the HD on the same IDE channel with the CD drive, and you have plenty of SATA connectors. The set-up of a SATA drive will be slightly easier especially for a novice. You can get a 250GB Seagate SATA from Newegg.com for $80 a 320GB for $95. 250GB Seagate 350GB seagate |
