1.  My home computer runs pretty slow opening files and applications.  I know I don't have enough memory to run games such as Men of Valor.  I think I need more memory.  How do i find out the necessary info?  It's a Best Buy sale purchase from 4 years ago, an E-Machines T2460.  I don't have much money to pump into gadgets.  What say ye?

2.  I was given an HP iPAQ for Christmas.  I've foold around with it a bit, but am unable to use the Wi-Fi applications.  Settings seem to be the problem.  Will the Wi-Fi connect to anyone's "hot spot" or do I need to suscribe to a service to use the hot spots?  If a subscription is necessary, why can't I just use my existing Verizon DSL Fi-OS connection?

Can't help with question #2

According to EMachines website your PC specs are:

CPU:   AMD Athlonâ„¢ XP 2400+ Processor (2.000GHz) with QuantiSpeedâ„¢ architecture
Operating System: Genuine Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Chipset: VIA KM 266
Memory: 256MB DDR (PC 2100)
Hard Drive: 60GB HDD
Optical Drive: 48 × 16x40x Max. CD-RW Drive; 16x Max. DVD Drive; 3.5" 1.44MB FDD
Video: S3 ProSavage8â„¢ integrated (1 AGP slot available for upgrade)
Sound: AC '97 Audio
Network: 10/100Mbps built-in Ethernet
Modem: 56K ITU v.92-ready Fax/Modem
Peripherals: Office Multi-Media Keyboard, 2-Button Wheel Mouse, Amplified Speakers
Ports/Other: 6 USB 2.0 ports (2 on front), 1 Serial, 1 Parallel, 2 PS/2, Microphone-In & Head Phone jack on front, Audio-In & Out, 3 PCI slots (2 available)

If you upgrade to 512MB, that will help.  As for right now, I would scan for any viruses and adware.  I would also run a defrag on the hard drive

WiFi is subscription based...Just as cell phones are subscriptions, you must pay to connect to the towers.

all you need to do is hook a wireless router up to your current internet connection and you will have "WiFi" in your house.  Elsewhere, you can pay for a subscription or connect to others unsecured networks.

To help speed up your computer, you can do the following:

- at 256MB RAM...you definitely need some more.  If you have an available RAM slot, I suggest you add like 512MB of RAM for a total of 768MB.  Make sure you put the 512 chip in the 1st slot and the 256 chip in the 2nd slot.

- START...RUN...MSCONFIG...check your startup applications and services. Turn off any you don't need to run in the background.  If your not sure...leave it alone.

- If using multiple Windows user accounts, open each and delete extra cookies, temp files, and history files.  Any extra files you know you don't need can be deleted at this point.

- Go to Download.com for Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D. Run both applications until clean report is given to clean up any malware.

- Time to run Anti-Virus application to clean up any additional harmful files.

- You can defrag the PC if you deleted a lot of files.  I don't recommend a defrag too often unless you really delete a lot of files.

This usually helps to initially clean up/speed up your PC.  Ultimately it would help to go through the registery and do some housekeeping, but I recommend you get some help with that.  Can't really walk you through something like that.  Computers have so many variables that affect speed and performance.  Normal maintenance should be  done similiar to the procedure I pointed out above.

Hope this helps a bit. Good Luck.

Ok, how do I buy the additional memory?  Is it marked "e-Machine memory - 524MB".

So I'm a techno-tard.

See this link.  I did a quick search on "add ram" for you.

Crucial.com

You have only 2 memory slots in your motherboard.  Since you are already using one you can only add 1 memory stick.

 Current             Additional            Total
   256mb    +         128mb     =       384mb
   256mb    +         256mb     =       512mb
   256mb    +         512mb     =       768mb
   256mb    +       1024mb     =      1280mb
                            (1 gb= 1024mb)

More memory the better.  Just depends upon your budget.
