I'm trying to download and install adobe reader freeware. When I try and execute the file from my desktop it gives me an error message saying there is no program associated with it for performing this action. Create assoc. WTF???
I read some of the trouble shooting tips on adobe and one mentions underscores replacing periods in the file name. I renamed it and replaced the underscores with periods and that didn't work either.
Any suggestions before I ventilate this ^&^%%$%$^ computer.

Just adobe. I d/loaded AVG and it installed with no problem.
I'm also having issues with the software for my daughters mp3 player. It "installs" successfully according to the program but I get a "cannot initiate openmg cd manager" error message.
I even tried installing it in safe mode incase there were issues with another program. No luv.

over a stick of ram..I added a stick of ram (256) and when I booted the computer up I got a dos screen telling me my config file was missing or corrupt.
I turned the computer off, removed the stick and it booted up okay.
I took the stick back to the store and the owner tested it in a computer he had and it worked. He said I might have a software issue and to try dumping windoze, installing it again and try the stick.
Not being to computer savvy I ended up doing what turned out to be an overwrite (although the install program stated it was deleting all old files, everything was still there.)

The only programs from adobe I have installed is photoshop v7 and flash player 9. Do you think that is causing a problem? It never has before.
I had adobe pro v6 installed before but it's "gone" now.

sounds like the memory might not have been compatible with your system.    some machines will not take all name brands of memory.    not all memory is certifed to work for  each board.

or the memory wasn't seated all the way.

reinstalling windoz was a horrible suggestion on his part.   that hardly ever fixes stuff.   im sorry he suggested that

i doubt it has anything to do with the other adobe products

the only other time i've seen this is when a new version of norton was installed on a system with a buncho virus's .  but after wards you couldn't open ANY program.

When he suggested it, he meant removing the os completely..assuming I knew how to do that.
I read on the adobe trouble shooting page about IE replacing .'s in a file name with underscores and that might be a problem.
This is the error message.

Compaq helped me. They sent me an EXE fix . I just click the item and it added or repaired (dont know which) a regristry key. All my programs work good as new again. I have provided the file so you may help others with the same problem. It only works with XP though.

run that it will edit your registry.  then restart your program

No..I was updating a friends software for her a couple of years ago and flashed her bios by mistake...that's where I am when it comes to tweaking computers.
ETA..ran the program. No change!

did the exe possibly not download properly so that windows doesn't know it's an exe?

What if you download the file to somewhere else on the pc, say C:\temp, and then rename it to something like "setup.exe", does it not run also?
