so I just picked up an Ibook G4 cause it was cheap.  First time using a Mac but I'm getting used to it and there are a lot of things I like better.  It's running OSX Tiger.  seems like Unix on the command line.

What are your best tips and tricks?  Helpful hints?

It seems like a CL UNIX because it's a BSD nix.

Browse around osxhints.com there is a lot of good info there.

Get this too.  It's a great little piece of software.  fink.sourceforge.net/

Got to unsanity.com and pick up their haxie's Fruitmenu and Windowshade as well as MenuMaster. There's also a utility called MaxMenus that's great. That'll soup up your interface and make the OS X experience a much smoother ride.

You might also get a copy of Eudora to replace Mail as it's a more solid program and won't crap out on you.

Then, of course, you'll need a copy of Firefox in order to browse sites that Safari hiccups on (not too often will this be the case but I need Firefox to access my online bank account).

Use it in good health!

My tip is to install ubuntu 6.06 power PC edition on it, but thats just me

Not bad machines though.  The screen has a tendency to get wierd when they get old though, but all laptops get that problem after a while (screen turning off, depending on position).

Its the LCD power inverter that dies.

Its the LCD power inverter that dies.

Sometimes the problem is caused by a faulty switch that detects if the cover is closed.  If it goes to sleep (white light turns on) while you're using it, then that's the problem.  One of our G4 iBooks has started doing this.  The laptop has been carried uncased (boss was too cheap to buy cases for the laptops) in a work truck 7 days a week for 20 months so a small problem like this is understandable.  The iBooks have already lasted four times longer than the last set of Dells we bought.  Those things were complete junk.z

Thanks for the tips so far guys.  I got this one to replace a Dell that has a screen that has gone dark.  Been all over the fixs for that so I'm going to just have to send it in for a fix.

So far I've been very happy with this laptop.  Seems much more stable than my other laptops.  In dealing with Dell I'm thoroughly unimpressed.

Does anybody know how to get the finder to show thumbnails of pictures instead of icons or a list? I don't think it can be done natively but maybe there's an app out there?

hmmmm....I've checked the box in the fuit menu that says "enable in-menu picture previews" in the settings tab but no joy.  still only get icons, lists and collumns as options.

what am I missing?

I'd recommend picking up OS X - the missing manual.  I switched to Mac back in January, that book was great in teaching the tricks of the OS. Link on Amazon

Another great forum to look at is mac-forums.com
