Heres the deal.

I have always run a wired network. 3 PC's and a PS2. Never had any issues.

I got a PSP and 2 New Laptops, one is a IBM T42P and the other is an older Dell. Both have wireless.

I replaced my old Linksys Router with a new Linksys WRT54G v4.20.7 Firmware. I configured the wireless as open with no security and set up the DHCP to only give out enough addresses for the amount of PCs running at 1 time (3). Sometimes the laptops connect but most of the time it is a struggle (99.9%). Reboots, unplug then plug in the router....its a nightmare.

I tried to setup the router and laptops using WEP and WPA Personal. I can see the network SSID listed but the laptops won't connect. I then tried to go back to open and I am once again able to see the SSID but the laptops won't connect.

I am at the point were I spend more time getting my wireless connected then actually working.

Does anyone have a step by step for a wireless/wired setup.

WRT54G Router
Dell PC Wired (No Wireless)
Dell Laptop Wireless
IBM Laptop Wireless

Any ideas?

after you setup the encryption.  did you type the code in the laptops when it detected the wireless network.   using the wpa2 is the best, and the easiest.

you might need to update the  wireless card drivers for it to function at the higher encryption schemes.

if its loosing connection, even as a unsecure network.   you probably have interference in the house/ whatever.   in the usa you have 11 channels to choose from.   try different channels, untill you find one that works.   after you change the channel give it a couple minutes to resync  back up.

cordless phones interfere, microwaves.  and other wireless devices can interfere.   you can take the batteries out of your phones and unplug the transmitter too see if that helps.    then again it could be your neighbors phone thats interfering too

main thing update your drivers so they support the higher encryption.  change the channel.  and type the correct key in and you will be set

Switched the channel a few times and finally got back on. The wireless router is 2.4GH and my home is a 5GH. Can my nextels be causing the interference??

I left it unsecured to so that I can get some work done, but I am going to try the WPA security again.

thanks

Any 2.4Ghz cordless phones in the house?
Mine would kill the connection all the time

I have a junk radio shack 5.8GH only. I have unlimited cell minute so no need for a lot of home phones. The kid that lives upstairs from me doesn't even have a phone (cell phone only).

I set the router to Ch11 and it seems to work pretty well for now. I tried Ch1-9 before and it would connect then drop or not even see the network.

Any tips on setting up WPA?

I just made sure that both laptops have the most recent drivers installed. and my main personal pc is hardwired.

like i said wpa2 is easy to setup.  select wpa2 personal >  select tkip+aes.    then for wpa shared key :

download xblock   install> when you open the program it has a tab called password.  generate a password.  and use it for your shared key.  i don't think the high security level with work. medium will do just fine.

when your 2 laptops find the network.  type the code you generated when its asked for

DHCP server might not of internally released the IP address.

A much simpler and secure way(lol) would be to just put your computers MAC addresses on a white list and blacklist all others.

All it takes is a little bit of social hacking, or a s'kiddie with ADD and time on hand.

But, yeah I see your point :P
