I had a few "dead" WRT54G version 3 and version 2 routers from work, that this firmware brought back to life.  If you have an older WRT54G router (pre version 5, especially nice if you have a version 3 or older) I definately reccomend trying this 3rd party firmware out.

I had messed with Sveasoft Alchemy before, but I dont think it holds a candle to this release (especially since you dont have to pay $20 to Sveasoft.  OpenWRT never really excited me much either.

Pretty cool that those routers that we thought were dead (would not keep a PPPoE connection active) work fine with this stuff.

Yeah i saw that best buy thread about this software yesterday.   i've never really had problems with the wrt54g routers myself.  i have installed over 25 this year.   only installed 2 v5 of them .

the only problem i have seen with the version 5 is that the remote connection doesn't work properly.

what most people don't do is that when they update the firemware with a newer version.  you are suppost to do a factory default inside the router. then reset your settings.

We have had constant problems with the version 5 routers not keeping a PPPoE connection, and if they do, the max connect time is around 20 minutes.  Completey unstable, worst product Linksys has ever released (IMO).  Never had a problem with previous versions myself, but this firmware is a good way to get the features of a $600 router working well with a little $55 WRT54G.

I don't see why you could not.

I dont have one of the three I put DD-WRT on in front of me, all I got at home is my SonicWALL, but I will try it out sometime, to make sure.

They kick ass.  Best product of its kind out there (IMO).  Cisco's are good, but the SonicWall just makes everything so easy.  I have the Tz 170 wireless (25 node).

They will do Content Filtering, Gateway AntiVirus, Gateway Anti-Spyware,  built in anti-spam, deep packet inspection firewall, IPSec VPN, wireless LAN intrusion detection, and enforced VPN encryption on wireless.  Damn good product, if you can afford them.

Which one, the sonicWALL, or the wrt54g with DD-WRT firmware?

I will have to find my book to confirm what the tech specs are, but I know of people running one TZ-170 wireless with 50 wireless clients connected at any given time, with no trouble.

i've always used linksys equipment.  i can't find it in writing but i think they are limited to 32 users.   i didn't know if that was a linksys limitation or a wireless limitation.

it would be good to know.   no worries if you can't find it in writing though.

thanks

Looks neat.  Be nicer if it did VPN.

It does do VPN, just have to install the VPN firmware included.  There is also a version for VOIP.

i am pretty sure that is the wireless portion rating.  i remember seeing it or a number close to it somewehere to but can't find it.  i was told it has to deal with available bandwidth and that the wireless portion is like a hub and not a switch, altough i could be wrong.

i am using a v2 with hyperwrt 2.1b+tofu13c and love it.  my main reason for getting it were i needed more ports forwarded and needed more power output.  for some reason my condo is in a rf void, everything rf has issues, cell phones, home cordless phones, wifi, etc.  there are 6-10 aps around me at any given point, maybe that is the issue.  we all use different channels but damn, i think the 2.4GHz spectrum is all filled up.  also with the stock firmware i would need to reboot the router ever 10days or so, now i only reboot it when i make a change, even though i know it is not necessary.  the 3rd party firmwares just kill the stock ones

I have an extra WRT54G v1 that I am going to flash with the DDWRT VPN firmware probably sometime tomorrow.  I want it to act like a WAP and I will have my cisco 1721 do the routing/firewall/etc.  I will let you know how it goes.
