I'm having a problem with a screen pop-up that says it's Internet Explorer and I should run a registry cleaner called WinFixer2005. It looks like a Microsoft product but I'm not sure if it's legit. I run Trend-Micro Internet Security, Ad-Aware and Spybot and have scanned my system with each but nothing is found. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have that too.  It is a nasty bugger.  Neither Norton or ZoneAlarms can deal with it.  Do a google search, you are not going to like what you find.

My Fiancee's computer has that, it's a nasty bugger, it has resisted all of my efforts to kill it.

If I knew the least bit about computers and their operating systems/programs I would make the change. Unfortunately that's not the case and I have to deal with the devil.

Try Ubuntu 5.10 "Breezy Badger" Linux.  Its as easy to install as windows, made for beginners, and you can run it alongside of windows until you ar comfortable using it full time.  It is based on Debian, has an auto update and install feature, and allready has drivers for just about everything.  It also uses the GNOME desktop envornment, but if you want the KDE environment, you can get Kubuntu for that.

After getting rid of Trend Micro (subscription running out anyway) and running a couple of new spy sweeps and a ad sweep it seems to have disappeared for the moment or at least this evening.

Ya wanna know how nasty of a bugger it is?  Check out these instructions that are posted to clean it off your computer.  I was going to simply suggest HijackThis! which is a great choice when you know the name of the spyware you're looking for.  But that site is saying that more is needed.

But SP2 (or at least SP1a is needed or your system can get reinfected.

Another removal guide - ugh, don't look pretty at all.

This got rid of it for me.

I downloaded this about 2 weeks ago and haven't had Winfixer or any other pop-up since.

Hey, I fixed it easy.  Just used the restore feature on XP, picked a date prior to the pop up.  No more Winfix 2005.

Have to be careful with restore, it will mess with things on the same drive as Windows.  I have a slave drive so was no problem for me.
