So I got a laptop (long story) It came with a wireless card but I understand I need a wireless router. What else do I need and how will I hook this up and get it to work?

Thanks

What are you wanting to hook this laptop up to?  If you have a network at home already, you just need a wireless access point.  If you are just setting up a new network and want to go wireless, wireless router can help.

Couple of questions though:

1) Do you have high speed interenet you will be connecting to?
2) How many other computers do you want to hook up, if any?

No Prob Bob.

I suggest the Netgear WGT624 Wireless Firewall Router.

This baby has a 108mb throughput with a firewall built in that has decent security (Trust me, on a high speed line you want security!).  It also has a four port switch, so what you may do is connect your PC to the router through a Category (Cat) 5 cable through one of the switch ports.  I assume that your modem is next to your PC and this would make most sense without adding a Wireless card to your PC (unless already equipped).  Other than that, It is really all you need.  - Maybe some virus protection also for your PC's.  What operating system are you running on your PC and Laptop?

I could not find what you were talking about on their website.  I'm not really sure I have ever seen any cisco items at Best Buy.  Maybe something new, as I have not been there in quite some time.

The thing to make sure of is you need security on both your router (such as NAT protection or other forms of firewall) and security of your wireless port.  You don't want some punk neighbor kid hacking into your wireless connection and downloading mp3s that the RIAA will catch you for!

Walmart has some nice Wireless Routers on the their website you might want to checkout.  The LinkSYS and Netgear are good brands, the other two I am not sure about.

If you can find that router you are talking about on the interent post the URL so I can take a gander at it.

Linksys = Cisco for Ethically-challenged merchants.

Many places are advertising and selling Linksys as Cisco, since Cisco bought out Linksys. AFAIK, there is very little interaction between the two divisions regarding product development and technical know-how.

If you go with the Linksys make certain you update the firmware on it before plugging your broadband device into it - there is a mile-wide security hole in it.

Dlink, Netgear all have firmware updates you should download and install also to fix various issues relating to the UI and Security.
