anyone ever use powweb hosting services?  I have a couple questions about its email features/logs.

It's likely email behind Plesk or some other hosting panel, so features and logs would be very limited.  Logging will be more detailed for their server team, but it's totally up to them if they'll provide you anything from that.

I understand that, but I need someone with access to a powweb admin screen to help be call bullshit on someone.

I basically need to know what access powweb gives to email logs.

I have powweb hosting a domain. I wish I didn't, but I'm too lazy to worry about transferring all my old email out and moving to someone else.

What flavor of bullshit are you looking to call?

Someone added themselves to a mail forwarding group that should not have been there.  I called them out. The "IT guy" said that a couple weeks ago he checked the SMTP logs going back to December, and said I was wrong...

Its my understanding that SMTP logs aren't even available on the client end, and I doubt powweb would keep them for more than a couple days if they were accessible.

I dont have access to a powweb access screen, to confirm there is no section to access SMTP logs.  And of course, he can't produce said log files.

SMTP logs can be in a few places. Do you have an in-house spam filter or email gateway that stands between your users and Powweb? That's where I go for my message traffic questions.

What kind of email hosting do you have? Basic POP/IMAP? Google G-Suite? Hosted MS Exchange?

What client software do you have for email?
Are you sure the DL in question is part of the powweb hosted mail server, or could it be a local DL on a person's email client?

but... as far as I know, SMTP will NOT show you group membership changes on an external system. Those are done via an administrative action. SMTP only shows you traffic as it goes through. You would be looking for admin logs on the host that handles your traffic.

]Is this a standard internal DL or was it a newsletter / constant contact type of DL?

I'm on chat with Powweb right now...
Assuming it was done via the Powweb web control panel, at best you will be able to find out what admin ID was used to make the change. According to my chat, the best you can do is see what IP the last few admin logins were made from.

Is there any logging for what powweb login makes or made a change to the destination address(s) on a distribution list - I think you call them forwarding addresses.

I will check and provide the information.

You can check the IP address via which your account controlpanel accessed at powweb.com/controlpanel/controlSettings/settings.cmp?page=secure

Sorry to inform you that there is no option available to check who made changes to the destination(s) of a forwarding address

That's what I suspected. Thanks.

You have me curious....
While its easy to mis-use a term and convery a generally right but technically fubar meaning, it's also easy to try the 'ol baffle w/ bullshit routine too.

If you care to vent on IM, I have popcorn and eagerly await the train wreck.

I sent an email to the board of directors of a non profit group.  That email address is set up in powweb to be forwarded to the 9 directors.  I got a delayed delivery email from an ISP on an address that was NOT supposed to be in the forwarded list.

I showed them the error listing the email address, along with my accusation and they told me I was full of shit

I looked into the http headers of the error and the sending server IP comes up as a powweb server.  So the ISP who issued the error, received the email from a powweb mail server matching the powweb mx record.

Their defense and reason I'm full of shit is because someone said they "called the host and checked the mail logs going back to last December and there is nothing there"
I said it takes 2 minutes for someone to add or remove themselves from that forwarding list, and no one would know.  I was told, they "checked those logs too".

ETA: yes, this person in question has access to the powweb admin pages.
