FML. 27" iMac decided I have the wrong password and I cannot get logged into my computer. At All.
OS/X sierra. At some point the machine password became tied to my icloud password. I don't use icloud, but I have an account and a password. This has apparently caused issues with many users so the newest update eliminates this linking of passwords. I know my icloud password and can log into my icloud account on my laptop. From icloud on my laptop I can see the iMac - it thinks it's logged in and running. I had to change the password Saturday because of an update. I've tried the old password and the new password and a bunch of variations on them and even old passwords. Nothing - just insists the password is wrong. Type it wrong enough times and it says that the password is tied to an icloud account (no shit? really!) Spent 3 hours on the phone with mac tech services. Eventually they had me do a dumb thing - delete the user account and then try to restore it be re-creating it. What that did, of course, is delete the user account and all the data associated with it. AAAAAAAAARGGGGHHHHHH! Luckily I have a time machine backup on a remote drive. Working with techservices we were able to restore the iMac to where it was early this morning before we deleted my user account. Which is - all my data is there, I think, but it won't let me log in and I can not access it from another user account. Of course the tech services guy is now done for the day - he'll try to get back to me tomorrow. Not like I have work to do or anything. |

Reboot off the recovery partition, launch terminal, use 'resetpassword'
If no recovery partition on system, make a Sierra usb boot install disc on another Mac and boot off of that to launch terminal. If you can't do either for some reason, reboot in single user mode and reset the password using dscl : https://developer.apple.com/legacy/library/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/dscl.1.html |

Thank you!
I was able to reset the machine password from another admin account on the machine. Problem now is the keychain - which I do not understand (I don't really understand 'keychain' much less the issues it is having). It is insisting I log into the keychain using an password from an old email account. I want that account and any reference to that account gone (it got hacked, and has not worked well since I reset the password) I can log into the email server for the email host and retrieve email - but my imac will not let me set that account up. It insists the password is incorrect. I've since updated my icloud account to a new master email and a new backup email The hacked email is no longer associated with my icloud account. I just can't seem to convince the computer of that. |
