I have an older WD Mybook 500gb hard drive. I hadn't used it in a while, and wanted to pull some files off it recently. I couldn't get it to recognize on my Windows 8.1 laptop, even after manually installing the drivers for it. I ended up swapping usb cables and it worked. Now, a few days later I tried to hook it up with that same cable and it won't recognize the hard drive again. I tried to swap back to the old cord and it won't work either. Is my hard drive blowing out cables somehow? Is there a fix or am I going to be forced to buy a new cable every time I want to use it? It is a powered hd and it indicates it is receiving power and the disk drive feels like it spins. I'm at a loss as to why it won't work.

It's kinda creepy that mine just started doing this last night.

Same OS, same drive.  The drive is even the same size.

Being weird aside, I'd like assistance in why it's not working.  I have a lot of deployment videos and pictures on it I would really miss.

If you have another cable, you might try swapping it out like I did, but pull off the important stuff while you can in case you can't replicate it later I guess. Sorry to hear I'm not in this boat alone, but it's nice to have company!

Sometimes when things like this happen, it has to do with the USB Drivers.

One thing to check is to go into your Device Manager and expand USB Serial Bus Controllers, and right click on the listed devices and go to Power Management and make sure to uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". If you are in a low power situation, this will case your USB ports to stop working.

The other thing is to power off your laptop, unplug all your USB devices and unplug the power cord from the laptop. Let it sit for 5 minutes are so and then power it back up and then plug in your USB drive.

Usually one of these two things will fix it.

Also try sticking it in a different usb port.

If none of the other suggestions work, disassemble and try another enclosure or sata/usb adapter.  I've had enclosures go bad before.
