for some unknown damn reason, I'm blocked on craigslist.  I get an message that looks like this

This IP has been automatically blocked.
If you have questions, please email: [email protected]

I have emailed that address about 10 times asking to be unblocked with no reply,  I have also contacted my ISP twice asking for a new IP, they claim to reissue me a new one after a 24hr wait (some server bullshit excuse) afterwords I do a hard reset on my modem/router and it doesnt change.

Im using a SURFboard by Motorola for a modem/router combo and my internet is unfortunately supplied by the Time Warner Cable .  Computer is a MBP, along with about 7 other items connected to my internet.

is there anyone on here that could help me or point me in the right direction.  this is getting beyond infuriating.  i am to the point of dropping my ISP and getting someone else just to remedy this (wouldn't be a huge loss,  TWC is easily the worse company in the world, if DTV had good satellite internet I would be buying it from them)

mind you i am NO internet wizard by any means..

thanks if anyone can help

Put your phone on the wifi of the same network and open up your craiglist app, do you get the same notice?

If not you might want to cleanse your system. Start with super SUPERAntiSpyware and then malwarebytes or some other stuff like that

Don't bother, if nothing on that modem IP can get on that IP is truly blocked.

I wonder why?

i really really have no idea.   I have 1 single account,  have only ever posted locally, and never over posted or that other bullshit you see.  and I've only posted maybe 5 times in the matter of a few years.

i have read that if my current IP (supposedly they get cycled every now and then) was used prior by someone else and they fucked the pooch i may be paying the price.

I do search on there A LOT but I can't believe that would be causing issues.

the leases on the routers are usually pretty long.
the only way I know of to reset, and I did it once before due to the same creigslist type block, is to unplug the modem for about an hour.
your ip will be reassigned during that time and when you plug it back in you should have a new modem ip.

a hard reset doesn't do anything. it would still show it to be online and won't release the ip to someone else.

Wifi doesn't work because it's on your network. 4G works because it's on your provider's network.

Call your ISP and ask them to re-provision a your IP. They should be able to force it over the network.

Or use a proxy as suggested earlier.

thats what i was getting at.. its an ISP issue not my computer..   my Verizon wireless accesses CL fine.. its my ISP that can't b/c my IP is blocked.

been on the phone with my ISP going on two hours now and arguing with them what the problem is.  they claim my IP is different then what I am telling them

finally came down to demanding a supervisor and threatening to end my service if they didn't re-provision my router.    they claim it won't fix anything and are claiming its my router/modems problem and to call them.  i did and they say its an ISP problem

fuck TWC   in the fucking face

my IP is apparently black listed is why CL blocked my IP..

ETA

TWC reprovisioned and the IP is still the same..

Are you leasing that cable modem from Time Warner or do you own it?

It would be interesting to see what would happen if you went out and bought a new Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem, that would throw a new MAC address at the problem.

Interesting problem

ok, so cl blocks an ip when they do something against the terms of service.
they record it based on who is using it at the time. but ip's get reassigned all the time.

The ip is tagged to your modem ethernet address, but it is assigned by the isp's dhcp server.
Generally no one gets a fixed ip unless you pay for it.
it is unlikely they said they changed it and it stayed the same, but it depends on if the goober on the other end knows what they are talking about.
it also could be you are looking at the wrong thing when you are checking your ip.
IT is not your computer ip, but the modem ip which are 2 different things.

now 2 possiblitlites
1. they did change it and you are still blocked.
     A. you lucked into another ip that is blocked.
     B. you have a cookie that marks you. did you try flushing your cache?

2. goober on the other end doesn't have a clue and didn't assign you a new ip.
A.ask for level 2 tech support. not a manager.
     B. log into the modem and see if you can release the ip. not sure what the interface looks like for twc.

not sure why the unplug and plug it back in later didn't work.

Because it wasn't unplugged long enough. My Comcast lease is 4 days. I currently have 2 days,17 Hours,6 minutes left on mine.

yeah, sorry, don't know what yours will look like. mine doesn't have a lease expire in the router. it does have a reset in it to change ip.
11/8/2015 6:09:24 PM EDT
[#16]
Rebooting the modem won't fix the issue.  The DHCP client will typically renew it's lease halfway through the reservation.  So it the reservation is 7 days (very common) it will renew in 3.5 days.  It is likely you won't get a new IP without staying off for the entire lease.

I am guessing there is a 99% chance the person you talk to a TWC has no idea what you are talking about.

I do own my own modem...  i don't like the idea of leasing a modem from TWC for an already shitty service.

now..   IP hasn't changed and all of a sudden CL is working fine.   nothing seems to have changed other than not being blocked.

that IP isn't the problem.  I can change my router (internal) IP all I want and didn't make any difference.  its my public IP that I'm issued from my ISP.

You are making a couple of assumptions that are not true.

The MAC address of the modem is used to provision the DHCP IP address.

That address, is what everybody is saying will change.  However, lots of ISPs have DHCP assigned to the MAC address by IP.

Yes, they use DHCP to hand out IPs and self-provision a modem on the network.  However, they use blocks of IPs to route efficiently do the point there are only a handful in the neighborhood... They know what MAC address goes on the modem and they know the address.  So they hand out an IP address suitable for that neighborhood and the routing upstream. Meaning you are very likely, to get the same IP address, and extremely likely to get a very SIMILAR IP address no matter how long you keep it off and what you reset.

Resetting DHCP doesn't let you draw from a pool of tens of thousands like you think.  It lets you get your own IP address back.

When the ISP moves upstream stuff around and it suits them to route you differently you will get a new IP.  You may not EVER get a new IP address unless you MOVE or switch ISPs. Yes, they don't guarantee you a single static IP, but they sure as heck do give you one most of the time.

Don't send the OP barking up the wrong tree trying to get his ISP to change something that is part of their critical operation. They won't do it.

Just use the phone for CL, or find a proxy to use, or free WIFI.  If it's not used often, then this is not a big deal.  Also, try going through other channels on CL not just that bogus email address.

If the IP address was a previous user, chances are CL never would have worked from his local network....

Good, then we are talking about the right IP address
