I have a Dell Optiplex 360 with 2GB RAM. I ordered a 2GB RAM upgrade off of Amazon. Went to install it and found 2 x 1GB RAM already installed (I assumed it was 1 x 2GB )

Anyway, I replaced one of the 1GB and my desktop still shows 2GB RAM memory. Did I receive a 1GB labeled as a 2GB?

Might be your computer is not recognizing the 2gb ram stick.

I removed one of the 1GB sticks and installed the 2GB stick and it showed 2GB RAM memory total. I removed the 2GB and it showed 1GB RAM memory.

Maybe you need a matched set (2x2)

Check for a bios update

For that PC with dell's proprietary mother board, you need matched sets. The reason why it showed 2Gb ram after installing the 2Gb stick (3GB total installed) is because it recognizes the biggest stick. Get another 2Gb stick (same model and manufacturer)
