They never start like that, they always morph into it over time.

Holy fuck, that first pic is nasty.  It looks like the cables were at least labeled, so it wasn't a total clusterfuck for you.

Nice cleanup job!

Cable management also does wonders.   If a management strategy isn't in place or strictly adhered to, it either gets messy pretty quick.  If a cable is left loose because it is "temporary," you will notice it's still be there three years later and you will forget where it goes.

That was about 8 hours for two people. Granted I was also fixing the wireless and making VLAN changes and tracking back all of the printers and other devices getting them moved to the correct network. It should be much easier to keep future changes organised. The hardest part is the marginal cable management and the annoying doors. The vertical cable management is just a old design and doesn't provide adequate space for all of the cables.

Proper length patch cords are also a must. Having things in the same 2 port rack connected with 25 and 30 foot cables is just stupid. We removed about a dozen of those.

The server room also just needed a good cleaning. Granted its not a dirty environment but a good wipe down moping is needed from time to time. I'm trying to get the floors stripped and polished soon and it painted.
