My 2 boys are interested in making things go and building.  So far we've been limited to Lego Technics and motors/gears (got a neat lego transmission kit from ebay and learned how shifting gears work)  but now I want to try them with some electronics.

I know little to nothing about these systems, except that the exist as little controllers and seem to be very flexible in how you can use them, lots of open source stuff and projects.

Can anyone recommend how to start here?  Has anyone's children done projects with these?  I think I wouldn't mind learning some of this myself so I probably will work along with them for the fun.

Nice place to start, the Arduino code is solid and fun to play with. These guys have good build docs and they are inexpensive.

Take a look at https://www.adafruit.com/ and https://www.sparkfun.com/ they both have tons of parts and kits and tutorials

Thanks to both of you.  Will check those out now.

Anyone else?

I always wanted to make an Arduino robot and program it to navigate just never got one. I'm a "big kid" though not sure how hard it really is. LINK

That looks cool.

I just found a bunch of Lego + Arduino projects that should interest them.  These look very neat.

Take a look at this.

This seems like a good kit

You get instant gratification making things light up or move.
