My hard drive went tits up this week so I installed a new Samsung Evo 850 500gb SSD in my Macbook.

Here is the problem I am running into.

I properly installed the new HD.  I preformed an internet recovery.  I properly formatted and partitioned to Mac OS Journaled with the GUID.

Upon start up the HD is readable and I installed OSX Mountain Lion without a problem.

Now the problem.

When the computer restarts after the OS install the screen goes gray with the dreaded file with question mark.  Meaning that the boot file is not being found or the HD is not being recognized.

Anybody have any ideas of what is going on?  Possible solutions?

Hold the Option key down while rebooting.  Does it give you any choice of boot drive - recovery partition, etc?

I will try that. I am in class right now so it will be a couple of hours before I can try again.

I reinstalled the OS this morning and will see if that worked when I get home this morning.

Still nothing.

I booted from my external hd and the SSD can be seen on the desktop.  So I what I will do next is boot from my external then clone the hd from my external see if that works.

My usb enclosure was bad.  I installed an old HD that works, that is working in my computer now.  So I eliminated the computer as the problem.  I hooked up the SSD to a new enclosure and I am cloning my old HD to it and making it bootable.  I read online that this is a common problem with samsung SSDs and this is a work around.  So far it is going well.  Hope fully this works, fingers crossed.

To add my computer is markedly faster with the old SATA HD, so I guess my old HD was going bad and I failed to recognize it.

I've read that SSDs with Marvell chipsets seem to do better in Macs for some reason.  I'm running Crucials in two macs with zero problems to date.  Just something to consider if the Samsung doesn't work out.

I am thinking it's the drive causing problems.  I successfully cloned on to the SSD but when I installit internally it won't boot.  I can't figure it out.

I'm running This one with no issues, and an older M500 120GB as a boot drive in another mac.  Both have been flawless.

I can boot the ssd from an inclosure but as soon as I install it into the computer it fails to boot to it automatically.  If I hold option down I can select to boot to it then it works.  I also changed the setting to make the ssd the primary boot drive but I get the question mark folder when I boot without holding option.

I am returning the drive today and getting a crucial ssd

Try this first.  If it still doesn't work, I'd return it and try something else.  Also, be aware the BX series Crucials do NOT use a Marvell controller - they use a Silicon Motion controller.  No idea about compatibility issues with that one.

I traded in the samsung with a crucial.  Same problem.  I am leaning towrds SATA cable because that is the only thing left.

Is this through the main SATA port?  I had this same issue on my 2012 with it not wanting to read SATA SSDs through the SATA port that originally held the DVD-ROM.  Turned out that port for whatever reason doesn't have good compatibility with most SSD drives, but the Intel and Crucial SSDs I had used in the main SATA port worked fine, you'd think they'd be the same compatibility.

I ran a Samsung Evo in my 2012 without issues for years. It was the older 840 though.

Make sure the drive is partitioned as guid. The default partition type is usually MBR. If you didn't change it it will cause issues with the Mac recognizing it as a boot drive. If you need to change it, you will need to reformat the drive.

eTA: never mind, I see that you said that you did that already. Sorry.

Yes, its through the main SATA port.  Initially I cloned the dive using a USB enclosure then booted from that and changed it to the main boot drive.

Zap the pram? (boot with command option PR)
Grasping at straws here. We just installed 8 or 9 SSDs in MacBook pros of that era and as I mentioned, I ran two different SSDs in my 15" 2012. It certainly an odd problem.

Interesting. I hope to buy a 1TB SSD soon. My 500GB stock drive is almost full.
