My daughter was home sick today and wanted to use my computer while I was at work. When she turned it on it had a black screen. I think that was because last night I downloaded windows updates but postponed restarting it. I shut it down last night and when she turned it on she didnt know it was configuring the updates. BTW I am running Vista on this desktop.
She texted me And said the computer had a prompt asking if it should restore. I told her I guess there had been a problem and to go ahead and restore. I told her to restore to yesterday but I don't know if she did that.
When I got home and turned it on I saw that i had lost most of the programs on my desktop including my browser. I also lost other programs such as Microsoft Office. Windows updater showed 176 updates that I needed to download so it must have restored to a point a long time ago.
Is there anything I can do to recover my stuff?
I am on my Iphone now.

Not sure if there would be a windows.old folder in there after a restore.

Also, go to your restore options and see what restore points are available to you right now.

My restore date choices are today when she tried. The next earlier date is in 2009.

I restored it to the most recent restore point I had to choose from. Apparently it wasn't creating restore points. I don't know what to check about that.
I restored it, then downloaded and installed all 176 Windows updates. I had to download the Avast uninstall tool, uninstall it and download and install a fresh version.
I went through my startup programs and eliminated several that I didn't need at startup like Itunes.
I figured while I was restoring the settings and programs I might as well defrag my hard drive. That took a while since I can't remember when I did it last- several years at least.
I was missing a few programs from my desktop including my browser- Google Chrome. I downloaded it using IE and somehow all of my bookmarks installed with it. They must have been in a file that Chrome looked for.

The only real snag I have now is that I can't find Microsoft Office 2007. I use that word processor instead of Microsoft word- I just like that one better. It may still be on my computer and I haven't found it. I did a search using the start button and it didn't show up.

It has been a minor annoyance but I have at least done some maintenance I should have done sooner.

I also created a restore point after the defragging and updates- just in case.
