Just got done building my new machine, installed windows 8.1, and will be connecting to the internet and updateing today.  I have always run Kaspersky in the past for virus protection, does anyone recommend a free anti-virus program that would work jsut as good? Or should I just keep plugging along with Kaspersky?

Avast or AVG  I have both on different machines.  AVG also has a free 30 day PC Tune up program that is well worth the discounted Amazon buy late on if you decide to keep it..  Keeps my units running at 100%

Bitdefender has a free edition that ranks near the top in tests.

Best advice I can give you is stay away from AVG. Every system I work on that has AVG installed has issues with AVG. And their "tuneup" program is a joke, causes more issues than it fixes. The toolbar AVG installs is basically malware. The AVG of old is gone, its a crap program now.

If you want something decent, Avast works well, although it does nag you to death to upgrade to a paid version for extra capabilities.

My personal preference is to buy K.I.S.S. AV programs, such as NOD32 or Panda. They stay out of the way and do a good job at protection. And they don't cost much, usually around 30 to 35 per year.
