Best friend just installed D2 on his laptop, ran well for several days after setting Compatibility Mode in the desktop icon and now it won't boot at all. Tried an uninstall/reinstall but no luck. I don't know what to tell him, I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than I can come up w/a possible reason/solution to this. TIA!...

Windows
Windows Vista/Windows 7/Windows 8 Run Diablo II in compatibility mode. Right-click the Diablo II icon and click Properties. Click the Compatibility tab. Check Run this program in compatibility mode. Select Windows XP (Service Pack 2) from the dropdown. Windows Vista/Windows 7 only: make sure that Disable desktop composition and Run this program as an administrator are checked. Click OK. Run the Video Test option under the Diablo II program listing. Select Direct3D. Once the game loads, click Battle.net to patch to the latest version. Have you done all these? |

Everything except run as administrator and re-running the video test. I've sent this to him, will post again when I hear back whether or not it works. Thx!... this is directly from battle.net which is a far better source of advice for blizzard games than you will find on a firearms enthusiast forum:
You needn't bother trying to run the D2Vidtst under Windows 7 or 8. I'd also undo any compatibility changes you've made for now. Running the game in windowed mode usually gets the game playable under the newer operating systems. Right click on the Diablo II: Lord of Destruction shortcut and choose properties. In the target box after the last quotation, press the space bar once and type in -w Your target line should look something like "C:\Program Files\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe" -w When you start the game, the game should now be in a window. If you don't want it any more, you will have to exit out of the game and delete the -w from the shortcut. Make sure that you have a space between the .exe" and the -w. |

Tomac From a search on Blizzards help forums: I have Windows 8.1 updated fully as of this date. I had the same problem described above and d2vidtst was not working but I did get it to work. Here is how... 1. Follow everything Warblade said. 12/30/2012 02:08 AMPosted by Warblade Right click on Diablo 2 shortcut under Compatibility tab check Run this program in compatibility mode for Window xp service pack 2; Check disable visual theme; Check disable desktop composition; Check disable display scaling on high DPI setting; Check run this program as an Administrator. 2. Right click on D2VidTst 3. Click 'Troubleshoot Compatibility' 4. When the box comes up click 'Try Recommended Settings' 5. It should then pop up again saying you should run D2VidTst in compatibility mode with Windows Vista (Service Pack 2). Click on 'Test the program...' 6. Another pop up comes up. Click on 'Run Test'. The screen with run through a few things testing out your graphics card and drivers. Let it run its course. 7. Then it will have a pop up describing your video card and options to choose. Make sure the best one is checked, preferably one that says 'Direct3D' and not' DirectDraw 2D' and click 'Ok'. 8. Then it will ask 'Troubleshooting is completed. Is the problem fixed?'. Click 'Yes, save these settings for this program'. 9. You have finished. It should tell you its fixed and good to go. Click 'Close' or 'Close the Troubleshooter' 10. Run Diablo 2 and have a blast. You might have to run it at DD2D. Play with it. The other option would be to run it inside something like Dosbox. I haven't tried that. Good luck! |
