I have a 6 year old Dell lap top that is running Windows Vista. It is getting old and not running very good anymore. I am 60 years old and don't make a living off a computer, i also am not a gamer. I just surf the web, post on gun sites, read news, e-mail people and write a letter now and then old man stuff.

I was thinking about getting a MAC. There are Macbooks pro with retina, and macbook air i don't know the differance. I would like to stay as close as possable to $1,000 or less. Should i concider a Mac or a windows machine? How diffacult is the Windows 8 to get use to using coming from vista? I just need some common sense advise so i don't waste my money on a computer i don't need. I also can't add hard drives a shit to a computer, what ever i buy will stay stock as i bought it with no up grades on my end. My current lap top has a 15 inch screen, i would like to get the widest screen i can reasonable afford on the new lap top i would buy.

If the computer hardware is physically in good shape, then why not just have someone reinstall the Operating System on it and call it a day?  Software is the only reason computers get "slow".  If it has Vista, then go with Windows 7.  Maybe just max out the RAM in the computer, or possibly install a new hard drive that's faster (7200RPM).  Both of those should be $80-150 depending on what type of RAM the computer uses.  I use old hardware all the time.  Most of my use is either web-related, ham radio, or other various utilities for programming radios, or whatnot.

I don't game much, either.

Got any local geeks that'd be willing to help out?

Of course, if the hardware is showing its age (beat up, cracked, etc...) then yea, go ahead and replace it.

As far as Mac vs. Windows... eh, more of a personal preference with what you described doing.  Sounds like you don't have any software that HAS to run on a windows machine.

No reason to spend ~1k on a mac for those basic needs.

Here are 2 inexpensive options.

Both come with windows 7 installed along with a windows 8 license should you want to try it down the line.

This is the cheaper option:

This is slightly more expensive, but available in a retail store:

The main difference between the 2 is that the more expensive model has a faster cpu more ram and a bigger hdd along with a discrete graphics processor.  None of theses upgrades will make a huge difference to you, but if you plan on keeping this computer for some time and not making any upgrades, than the additional cost increase for these upgrades may be worthwhile.  The only downside is that the discrete graphics processor will reduce batterylife a bit.

An even cheaper option would be to go the windows 7 route and a Samsung 250g evo ssd. Fast as you'll need it to be for a couple of hundred dollars or so
