Just got the email that as of today (yup no advanced heads up) log me in free is no longer free.  You have to pay $50 for two computers.  Anyone using anything similar that is free.  I use it mainly for my mom whenever she needs help with computer stuff.

Assuming it's a pro version, not a home version, of Windows, I just enable remote access using remote desktop that's built into windows.
Will probably just have to forward port 3389 on her router.

I posted this on a similar topic.  It might work for you:

One secure way is to install Hamachi and make your own private network - it uses 256-bit SSL
You get a Hamachi IP to use with any decent VPN software (I like UltraVNC which has file transfer options - TightVNC is okay also but I've had less headaches the Ultra.)
Set up the VPN program on your PC, punch in the Hamachi IP you have for your desktop and you're in.

I use it all of the time to "proxy" into my mom's computer to help her with stuff and fix things.
I have her's set-up to be ready to accept my viewing whenever she has it powered on.

(You have to install Hamachi and the VPN software on both PC's.)

I have used TightVNC before, but I was caught unaware by the Logmein screwover, so I switched to Chrome Remote Desktop.  I only need to connect to work Win PCs for now.
