Every now and them when I am running my computer on battery power, the screen goes whitish yellow and everything fades to the point where it is difficult to read.

Within 30 seconds the screen goes back to normal, gradually darkening.

Its been doing it for over two years now and it has gotten worse.

At first I thought it was some sort of problem with the backgrounds.

When you say that everything fades, you mean that everything gets dark, correct?

If so, it could be inverter, or the CCFL, or the connection between the two.

Only happening on battery could potentially indicate a power conversion issue, but I wouldn't jump to that conclusion.  I'd start with booting to a Linux CD, verifying that the problem persists, then go to reseating both ends of the ribbon cable to the display, and the wires from the inverter to the CCFLs, at least on the power end, and then only on the CCFL end if it's within your skill and comfort level.   While you've got it open, take a look at the inverter board and see if there is any obvious signs of damage.

Alright, thanks.

Everything gets really dim, and it takes a few seconds to return.

I have a rotating desktop background...one of the images depicts Central Park after a snowstorm. Yesterday when it happened, it actually looked like the photo had fogged up.

If you have a external monitor, hook it up and see if the same thing happens on it. This will tell you if its motherboard/vid card related or just a problem with your laptop screen.
