My dad called me up today with a request fix his computer and a few hours later I'm sitting here scratching my head,

I'm in safe mode and I cannot boot Superantispyware or Malwarebytes from a flash drive no less.

When I try installing Malwarebytes I get the code just as it's about to finish install "CoCreateInstance failed; code 0x80040154. Class not registered" several times after clicking ok and the a Runtime error 372

When I try installing Superantispyware It's coding as its's about to finish install   "Error creating shortcuts, aborting installation"

Windows XP,

This comp is royally screwed, if anybody has any ideas on what I can do I would appreciate it, my old man would too.

UPDATE:
I was able to access Chameleon for Malwarebytes and it looks like it is working, current status via the Chameleon window in safe mode is "Killing known malicious processes please wait"
UPDATE 2:
Chameleon did not work same error as before. I'm having him back up all his stuff, I'm gonna try Combofix.

If possible, I would probably just do a system restore. While it doesn't answer the question of what the nasty was, it is generally a faster path.

Pull the drive and slave it to another clean PC. Try to run the tools from there.
If that doesn't work, try running them after booting from a bootable CD/DVD

If that doesn't work, backup, nuke, pave

It's a netbook.

Already backing up and prepping for the nuke.

I wouldn't even trust the backup.

Format nuke,  start from scratch,   and be careful where you go sticking your computer in the future.  Plus really good anti-virus software that

gets updated daily.

Would scanning the flash drive on a clean machine prior to transfer indicate a virus?
