I used to use Vizio to draw out my network.  I'm sure something similar exists today, but haven't looked into it in years.

I also used to use some freeware that used icmp/etc to find all nodes on a subnet, interrogate them, and report what type of device they were.  Also came with cool icons for servers, routers, etc,. and basically drew the network for me.

Anything like this still exist?

there was a cisco app..had limited devices though...I'll look at it tommorow.

and PDQ inventory has a free version I think.

solar winds lansurveyer  is a great commercial package. (anything they make is pretty damn good)
It polls and exports to visio. Free Trial then $1995.00

Spiceworks Network mapping tool is free

if your fairly well versed The Dude can be a great tool.
Solar winds and spiceworks free stuff can be fun to use as well.

Otherwise Ipscan and a ms paint always works
