I upgraded my computer.  I'm trying to connect DVD drive and ssd and when I connect them to the PSU the computer shuts down. I am using all the primary sata connections on the PSU, so this is with another Sata cable that I had to connect to the PSU. .  What am I doing wrong?

System is

Intel 3770

Gtx660 ti

Ocz 1000w

Asus mb

Went to the OCZ support forum. They suggested using another cable and it worked. I had tried one previously and it did not work but it's like every piece I touch, as soon as I speak with a tech the problem is magically solved.

Are you plugging in the drives while the computer is on?

Uh, yes?  I guess I shouldn't??

Plugging them in while it's on isn't necessarily bad.   Any PSU should handle the tiny inrush from the optical drive (the SSD is next to nothing), without tripping the short-circuit protection (which is likely why it's shutting down).  And, Intel/AMD controllers in AHCI mode are hot-plug capable, so the data line can be fine as well.   I couldn't even begin to count how many times I've hot-plugged stuff.

Possibilities:

1)  Your SATA controller isn't in AHCI mode, and isn't handling the hot-plug well.
2)  Your PSU is near max capacity.
3)  Your PSU (or drives) are faulty.
4)  Your PSU (and/or drives) are of poor design, with either high inrush, or overly-aggressive short-circuit detection.  Perhaps a combination of both.

Personally, I've never seen a PSU shut down from plugging such a small load in.  I would try to find the reason and fix it.
