If MS Word sees it in recent documents, but it cannot find it and its not in documents?

right click on it and try open file location

..if that menu option is present.

This is for the recent documents in your start menu.

not sure about from within ms word itself.

Document could be on a flash drive. Once it's removed the link remains, but the document is no longer available.
Ditto for a network drive. If your profile doesn't allow you to link to that drive - the link won't get you there.

Last option - file was deleted after Word was closed. Check the recycle bin.

The "recent documents" list is just a set of shortcuts.  There is no guarantee that the docs will still exist when you click on the shortcut if you have otherwise manipulated the doc(s) using File Explorer or the like.

Right-click on the shortcut in the "recent" list and choose "properties" to see where the file was.

Can you still open it from the recent documents?

If so open it and do a Save As so you can pick where it gets saved.
