Our VP has a HP windows 7 machine in his office that he connects to from the road with remote desktop (using a custom port).  He keeps complaining that he can't connect to it and someone has to reboot his computer and then it works fine.  When this happens I'm not able to connect to it from the inside of the network either, so the network firewall is eliminated from the possible problems. Once rebooted it's fine from the inside and outside of the network.  I was going to try turning off the windows firewall to see if that could be it and I was also wondering about video drivers causing it... I use remote desktop on tons of machines in our branch offices and have never seen this issue before.  I looked around on google last week and found a few cases on XP that guys never really pinned down.  As soon as he gets caught up this morning I'm going to throw it on my workbench and try to figure it out.  Just thought I'd see if anyone else here has ever ran into this.

PS, I already checked Power Settings to make sure it wasn't going to sleep.

Is the NIC allowed to go into power saving mode?

I didn't check for the nic specifically, but if I remember correctly, I was still able to ping the machine when it wasn't responding to remote desktop connections.

Check the RPC service.

i've ALWAYS had that issue with rdp.

once the user logs all the way out or the system is restarted.   someone in the buidling has to login with their password and then the remote user can log back in.

logmein is a much better solution

I've used the logmein stuff for creating a virtual network and THEN connect with rdp.  They have a remote control product also?

Yep.  I use it to connect to my work PC all the time.
