I've been looking into getting a tablet for my wife. We have no smartphones at the moment so we are not OS specific. Her uses would be reading books, netflix and surfing the web.She does a lot of driving to and from work and stays at her parents a few nights a week to cut down on travel time. We have a 3yr old so something that can take a little abuse would be nice. So far I have looked into the Kindle Fire, Nook color, Samsung Galaxy tab 10.1 and the ipad 2.
From the reviews I've read it seems the samsung has some screen issues with what look like smudges between the glass and screen. Fire reviews seems to be all over the place. Not looked much into the nook. The only bad part I could find about the ipad2 other than the apple hate(which I really dont like apple but if the product is better than everything else out there I will go with it) is the screen seems to be some what fragile. Any suggestions or advice? |

I just picked a Galaxy 8.9. Very nice unit.
If you want top of the current heap, go with the Galaxy or iPad 2. The Asus models look very nice for money. Your biggest choice\question is OS (Operating System). Droid OS is preferred by me for a tablet. In my experience, people's biggest complaint about iPad is iTunes. (I am not an Apple hater at all, own one and support them as well as PC's on a daily basis). YMMV Jon |

Screen size is a key issue, along with the OS (Ipad v. Android). I LOVE my Motorola XOOM. Decide what OS you want, and then the screen size. If you want a 7 inch android, the Kindle Fire is at a great price point. If it is a 10" Android, then I would get the XOOM. |

Windows 8 tablets will drop October-December. Around that time they should push down the price of android tablets due to increased competition of a fully functional tablet (running a desktop OS) rather than the limited use of the android OS. Not to mention holiday/black friday/cyber monday sales. We are also likely to see much higher resolution screen tablets in 2012 from both apple and the various Android tablet manufacturers. The wait will be worth it. |

For reading and portability 10" tablets are too big without a bag IMO. Hard to hold for reading long periods, especially if you lie down. I have a Galaxy 7 and love it. Main uses are reading, web surfing, GPS navigation (never use garmin now), games and movies. I constantly google shit from it via voice control. Love it.
Cant tell you how much I love this thing. |
