I'm basically building the mid range computer from here: http://www.build-gaming-computers.com/gaming-desktop-computer.html

except I'm going to go with a Sapphire 100327L video card and add another 8gb of RAM.

Video card switch is really just personal preference. I prefer ATI over NVIDIA. Any reason I should change my mind?

More RAM is because more RAM.

I'm also looking at a Blu-Ray burner instead of just a DVD drive.

Looking for a computer capable of viewing and editing HD video from a SONY camcorder and GoPro Hero HD.

I'm not much of a gamer on the computer, I play Minecraft and Terraria but this will blow those away.

Will this fit the bill?

Lest costly than that build and better too, what's not to like.

The price on my link is well overstated. Pricing this out on newegg comes out around $895 for just what I posted, after mail in rebates, minus the optical drive.

Running the numbers, your changes only save about $40 and I don't see much improvement.

In most cases the stuff you recommend replacing will sacrifice performance.

The HD has a smaller cache and the power supply is 100w less.

The only real improvement I saw was the video card and it wasn't a huge jump. Although having two DVI outputs is nice, wouldn't have to use a dongle that way.

Lets start with the motherboard.

The Asus in that link is based on the older P67 chipset, lacks the newest features found with the Z68 chipset motherboards.  Not to mention it has that annoying "armor" heat sink all around it.

Cache for the HDD is irrelevant, I guarantee you will get better performance with the samsung HDD.  Not to mention due to the recent Thailand flooding, HDD production has taken a big hit (WD was hit hardest) and HDD prices have skyrocketed.  The samsung has gone up in price the least and has been one of the top selling HDD's on newegg since it was released, and is currently sold out.  It achieved that status for a reason.

The Mushkin ram will perform better than the Corsair due to lower latency timings.

Having an external sound is unnecessary for 99% of desktop builds.  The integrated audio on the motherboard will be more than enough.

Higher Wattage on the power supply does not make it better.  A 650W psu will handle any single card single gpu setup on the market.  Furthermore with this intended configuration having a higher wattage psu would be doing you a disservice since the normal load on the PSU would not be in its ideal performance range (usually around the 50% mark)

As for the GPU it doesn't make sense to buy a very high end card now since AMD will be releasing its newest GPU's later this year and nvidia has plans to release their next generation GPU's early next year.

So you have 2 options:

Buy a cheaper gpu now and pay the price for a newer gpu when they arrive (if you wish)

or

Buy an evga video card and make use of the step up program (ability to upgrade to a higher end card up to 90 days after purchase, only have to pay the difference between the two).

The problem with the step up program is that you are limited to a 90 day window, buy too early and you could lock yourself out when the period expires before the new cards are released to the market.

Also when new GPU's tend to come out, they drive the prices down on older gpu's.  Also you will want to wait and see if you will find any good online black friday/cyber monday deals.

I also stuck in a blu-ray drive which will reduce the cost difference.

Finally I stand by my comment that you will not see a performance decrease between the two builds.  Worst case they will perform the same, best case my build will be somewhat faster.

Still better than Taiwan/China.

What do you have against Taiwan?
