This just started a few days ago, and it has me perplexed.

I have Dell XPS laptop w/ Windows 7.  A few days ago, it starting not booting up if something is plugged into a USB port.  If something is in a USB port, the computer will come on for about 10 seconds and then immediately shut down.  If I unplug the USB ports, it boots up normally.  I can plug stuff back into the USB ports after it boots, and everything works normally.

This seemed to start after a Windows Update was installed.  Not sure if it is related to that, or if there is some sort of hardware conflict, or USB driver issue.

Anybody have any ideas?

If the PC never makes it to Windows then it isn't a driver issue. Visually inspect all USB ports and make sure something isn't broken. If one of the contacts is shorting out with a device plugged in that could cause the issue you describe.

Narrow down the USB ports, one device in a port, move it to another port, unplug the device and try another one at a time.

If it's a bad USB port and not a bad device, a motherboard replacement is in order.

Make sure USB isn't set first in the boot order.

Thanks everybody!

I checked everything and think I have narrowed it down.  My laptop boots fine with other things plugged into the USB ports, but not if the USB hub is attached.  So, I think it is something wrong with the plug for my USB hub.  Maybe the plug was damaged, or just went bad.  Looks like a new USB hub might be in order.

Check for a BIOS update for the laptop.  If the hub works after you've booted, then the USB support in the BIOS is my guess.

If your BIOS sees the hub as "drives" it will hang the boot process waiting for a response from the "drives" that it thinks should be responding.

Thanks.  I will check into updating the BIOS, although I have no idea how to do that.  And I have made no changes to the boot drive order.

I still think there is something wrong with the plug for my USB hub.  I can unplug stuff out of my USB hub and plug them into the laptop's USB ports, and it will boot just fine.  However, if the USB hub itself is plugged in, the computer will not boot up.
