I got a new laptop and am thinking. I have two full height mini pci cards. I’m thinking of adding a 64Gb solid state to one and moving my os over to it. Has anyone done this? How did it work?

I am assuming that you mean mini pci express cards. Mini pci is a mini version of pci.

It is faster but due to the limitations of flash memory there are circumstances in which you should not use them. If you do not do anything technical on your computer then it would not matter.

I was looking up an old post when I saw this, hope the thread isn't too stale!

Mini PCI-E, or mPCI-E does not usually have any SATA lanes on it so it is not bootable. When the Asus Eee PC netbooks started shipping with mPCI-E SSDs they were actually modified slots with 2 SATA lanes instead of the usual USB. So most mPCI-E slots will not be able to boot (no OS drives, but it'll still recognize the SSD for storage) unless it specifically says bootable or SATA/mSATA over PCI-E. These days, especially because of this confusion, laptop and mITX motherboard specs will specifically refer to a bootable mPCI-E slot as mSATA. Check out some of the mITX all-in-one motherboards on Newegg to see if they make this distinction.

So after all that rambling: because your laptop has 2 slots, it is likely that one of them is actually mSATA and can therefore use an SSD as an OS drive. Try to find some documentation on it to find out which one it is.
