First let me say that I live in a very rural area so I have only three options for internet-dial-up, cellular or "high speed" wireless. Dial up isn't really an option, and I would kill my 5 gb cap if I went the cellular route.

So I have "high speed" wireless. I put it in quotes because I have the quickest package and it is only 512K. The signal comes from a tall point 8 miles from my house and then I have a planar antenna on my roof that runs a cat 5 into the house to a small box (let's call it a modem for simplicity) that plugs into the wall and then another cat 5 to the router.

My service is intermittent-meaning that the signal drops once or twice an hour for a minute and then it returns. If I have the modem feeding right into my computer, the computer deals with it just fine. I get the little pop up saying that I have no connection. When it returns, the computer picks it back up just fine.

If I have my router in the mix, it doesn't recover. I have to reset my router. Waiting a minute every hour or so is something that I can live with, but resetting the router and re-entering my setup settings is HUGE PAIN in the ass. One of the wired LAN connections doesn't work and it is old so I don't mind replacing it.
It is a Netgear 54 MBPS Wireless Router WGR614 v6

Does anyone have an idea of a router that might be better able to deal with this?

The other thought I had was to put a wireless card in my desktop and use it as an access point. It is always on so that wouldn't be an issue.

Thanks
Jared

my suggestion would be to download the latest firmware for your router apply it,  then try it for a few days.

if that doesn's fix it.  buy a another router.   dlink dir655 is popular
