Windows 7 SP1 was finally released today. If you don't want to wait for automatic updates to install it, go here. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/service-packs |

Does it add any new features or is it just a pack of all the security releases? There are some articles out there which explain all the contents, and which I am too lazy to link to right this minute, but here's the simple version: 99.5% of SP1 is just a collection of all the existing bugfixes, patches, etc. that have already been put out since Win7 was released to manufacturing. The other 0.5% does add a few small items of additional functionality, but nothing particularly noteworthy or impressive. FluxPrism |

Does anyone have a direct download link? I have to a file manager as I am on sat net. Looking for that now. I like to keep standalone copies of all service packs, just in case I have to reinstall Windows unexpectedly. I know I could get all the same updates - plus new ones - through Windows Update later, but I hate having to re-download a bunch of stuff. I'm not on metered Internet or anything, but I prefer to have all the latest security fixes in before I connect a fresh Windows install to the Internet. It's also nice to have when I'm reinstalling Windows on a machine without Internet access. update1: Ouch, it's a whopper. I guess if you want a standalone installer, you have to get a gigantic 1.9 GB package including a service pack for Windows Server 2008. Meanwhile, Windows 7's Update is telling me I only need to download about 65 MB to get all the required fixes from SP1. Of course I've already downloaded about a zillion updates since first installing 7. Those things add up. |
