I purchased an 250 gb external hard drive and I am looking to have it password protected.

I downloaded truecrypt but in order to open the encrypted hard drive I need to have truecrypt access it.

Is there any way to just have a password to access the drive without needing a program to open it?

Thanks!

Nope.  Something will need to be asking for that password.  If you don't want to worry about installing TrueCrypt to use the drive, don't encrypt the drive, make an encrypted container in the drive leaving enough space for the TrueCrypt files.

You could use bitlocker if you are running windows 7 ulitmate.

Apart from the questionable security provided by bitlocker, he would only be able to use the drive with computers that have bitlocker installed, which doesn't really fit his needs.

The best solution is to leave run for TrueCrypt on the drive in traveler mode, or to buy a hard drive with hardware encryption.

Make a 249gb container on the drive that is encrypted and use the spare 1gb for the truecrypt.exe and other bs. Thats how I run my thumbdrives and portable HD's

Yep.  That's the way to do it.
