Does anyone know of any companies that offer this? Google-fu didn't return anything relevant. I have no problem paying monthly/yearly if my account is protected by a supplemental log-on. Alternatively, anyone have any tips on making an email account only accessible by YOU? The mere existence of keylogger malware means that a secure password isn't worth jack squat IF your system is compromised. |

For individuals it would be cost prohibitive. You'd have to get your email provider to install something on their server or buy a whole new type of server for it. Probably not going to happen. In addition, email is transmitted via plain text and is not typically treated as secured by anybody else; man in the middle, simple snooping, and whatever the person you are emailing with does with it will all make your security useless. You CAN set up a secured path with someone else via email (if they also know what they are doing) by using PGP encrypted email certificates, or just sending TrueCrypt containers back and forth. However that security will not apply to anybody else, or your general email box. The best defense against keyloggers and stuff is not doing stupid shit with your computer. Don't use IE. Don't view porn or download "wares", keep it updated, etc. You COULD make a read-only live CD and then log into Gmail only using that and make a password file on the CD you copy and paste in (which will block hardware keyloggers). Basically though, if you want secure, don't use email for your data. If you need the type of protection you describe, you shouldn't be using email.

Actually, keyloggers usually can't read passwords in a keychain. Therefore your password would be protected in the case from a keylogger.
As for everything else, I'd have to go with the above, or running a email client off of a removable USB drive (hell an ironkey for that matter). Then again, you could just run off of a bootable USB stick and do everything that way..... ETA: I'm stating the above because it looks like you're more concerned with the privacy on YOUR end as opposed to the transmission or receiving end. |
